Happy New Year

As much as I enjoy the relentless snowfall and sub-zero temperatures here in Milwaukee, my job requires me to start preparing for the rigors of Spring Training baseball and the harsh reality of Arizona’s sunny, seventy degree days.

We’re less than a month away from my favorite declaration of the year, “pitchers and catchers report for duty.” Actually, voluntary camp opens February 9th and pitchers and catchers are due to arrive in Maryvale February 13th. The entire roster is required to report February 17th and the first official Spring Training game is scheduled for February 25th versus Oakland. Every Spring Training will be broadcast live either on the Brewers Radio Network/WTMJ or via the webcast at Brewers.com. Stay tuned for the official on-air schedule. Fox Sports Wisconsin will also televise three Spring Training games.

As for me, I’ve enjoyed just being a husband and a dad this off-season. I don’t take many free-lance broadcasting gigs in the winter so I can get involved in my daughter’s activities and do projects around the house. You can imagine my ‘honey-do” list after seven months on the road with the Brew Crew. I played a lot of golf in October and spent some time in Texas in December. Once the deep freeze arrived, I was able to catch some football at Lambeau and Camp Randall, some hoops at the Bradley Center and the Kohl Center, and a number of great live concerts at the Pabst and Riverside Theaters. The Marcus Center and Discovery World have been family hot spots this winter as well.

This month, I’ve been lurching around the office trying to catch up on what’s new at Miller Park. Ticket sales are strong and the big offseason projects are on schedule. The new Club Suites are sweet! The major renovation project is almost complete and they look great, very hi-tech, not that I’ll ever be in one for a game. The Fan Zone got a nice makeover. More stuff, more room, cool fixtures and ladies, you’ll be happy to know you now have your own “womens only” section. There is a new Harley-Davidson area in the outfield that should really add to the character of the ballpark. Also, joining the ’57 and ’82 Party Suites, there is a new ’08 Brewers room available to the public this season. You’ll notice a number of tributes to the ’08 Wild Card champs around Miller Park in ’09.

I’ve also done a few public appearances with General Manager Doug Melvin this January. Since he’s stuck with me for 3-4 hours during these outings, I get the chance to pummel him with questions about the ballclub. He always offers great insight and a ton of information. My notebook is full so in the coming weeks, I’ll report his breakdown of the organization piece by piece. But, until then, here’s a quick overview of current state of Brewers baseball:

-Trevor Hoffman was a huge sign. He’s excited about Milwaukee and the Brewers are excited to have him. He fills a big hole at the back end of the bullpen and is an influential personality. Every time he saves a game, you get to witness a record setting day at the ballpark. The Brewers have visions of a pennant race and Hoffman’s 600th save coinciding this season (He’s 46 away – why not?).

-While Yovanni Gallardo and Manny Parra will be asked to blossom into big league stars (they’re certainly capable), landing another starting pitcher is key. It adds depth to the rotation and strengthens the bullpen. Braden Looper is the name that continues to show up but there are a number of others on the wish list as well. Free agent Ben Sheets appears to be headed in a different direction but the door is never closed until he is signed. Reports on Chris Capuano (elbow ligament replacement surgery) are positive. He could see action this spring and a late-April return to the Majors is not out of the question. Any success he has would be a nice bonus.

-The lineup is pretty much intact. Still right-handed heavy but full of All-Stars now boasting post season experience. Competition at third base could offer some left-handed balance.

-The day has come for the young nucleus of talent to cash in during arbitration. Long term deals have been offered to all of the young stars, only Ryan Braun has accepted. That means a shift in payroll is required. Basically, the bench goes from high priced veterans to low-priced youth and second chancers. Left handed options are the goal. Free agent Craig Counsell, a lefty, is a versatile backup and is still unsigned. He’s highly regarded and has an open door if he chooses to stay in Milwaukee.

-The minor league system is thin in starting pitching but strong in every other area, especially catching. As evidenced by the CC Sabathia trade last July, there are two kinds of currency in Major League Baseball; the Yankees kind, old fashioned $…and the Brewers kind, blue-chip prospects. The Crew is loaded with minor league talent that other clubs would love to acquire so a mid-season impact trade is always a possibility.

The bottom line, the Brewers are in very good shape and there is good reason for optimism for the upcoming season. I’ll be able to chat with new Manager Ken Macha, his coaches, and a number of players at Bob Uecker’s Winter Warm Up and Brewers On-Deck events so I should have plenty of interviews and new information here on the House of Blogs soon. Please feel free to send any questions by clicking on the “comments” icon below and I’ll take them directly to the target.

Until then, I hope the hot stove keeps you warm!

Last, Last Call – 2008

It’s time to close the book on the 2008 season. Thanks to all of you who visited this webpage. As the “hot stove league” heats up and moves are made, I’ll check back in right here on the House of Blogs with exclusive interviews of the new Brewers…so stay tuned.

It’s an honor to hold the position of Brewers television play-by-play announcer and responsibility I don’t take lightly. It was also a great thrill to be able to call the post season for TBS and an even bigger thrill to witness the first playoff games in Milwaukee in a generation. The city, the fans, Miller Park had all the “national-types” talking. Milwaukee showed very well on the big stage…just like we knew it would. Way to go!

Recently, I signed a five year extension that will keep me in Milwaukee until the end of the 2013 season, at least. My family and I are thrilled. We love it here and feel blessed to be in such a special community.

Bill Schroeder signed a multi-year deal with the Brewers, as well, which I’m very happy about. I think he breaks down a game as well as anyone in the business and he’s a pleasure to work with on a nightly basis. He’s one of my best buds.

Special thanks to my on-air colleagues Jeff Cirillo, Davey Nelson, Jeff Grayson, Trenni Kusnierek and the glue that holds it all together, Craig Coshun, a pro’s pro!

And a big thank you to our entire Brewers TV crew, led in the truck by John Walsh, Ryan Schaber, Michael Oddino, Brian Mikolajek, and Brent Vallenti. Most of them will be busy with Bucks Basketball this winter but we all look forward to re-assembling for Spring Training baseball, which will be here before you know it.

I hope you have great off-season. I’m going to be hanging with the family, tuning up my snow blower and preparing for the winter. I’ll leave you with my some of my favorite highlights of the 2008 season:

Brewers @ Phillies

Half empty: The Crew is coming off a 3-7 homestand and has already lost as many games in September than they did the entire month of August (20-7)

Half full: The Crew won a grinder of a game Wednesday versus the Reds and enter a key 4-game series in Philadelphia in good spirits and a 4-game lead with 16 to play in the wild card race…and Ben Sheets on the mound for the opener.

Hang in there Brewer fans, meaningful September baseball is rarely without some turbulence!

Here is a statitstical montage Brian Mikolajek and I put together, with an assist from STATS to get you ready for the Phillies series:

The season series between these clubs is tied at one win a piece.

The Brewers have won each of their last three road games, outscoring their opponents 21-4 in that span. However, they have dropped seven of their last 10 games overall.

Philadelphia has lost three of its last four games, including two in a row.

With his win on Saturday, Ben Sheets established a new career-high with his 13th win of the season. Sheets is 2-3 with a 4.50 ERA in seven career starts against the Phillies.

Jamie Moyer is 2-0 with a 1.46 ERA in his last two starts.

Seventeen of Mike Cameron’s 24 home runs have come on the road this season.

Ryan Howard has three doubles, three homers and seven RBI in his last five games. Howard is 0-for-6 in his two meetings with the Brewers this season

Reds @ Brewers

Stadium08RS053.jpgThe Brewers started the homestand leading the Wild Card race by 5.5 games over the Phillies and 4.5 games behind the Cubs in the Central Division. After a 2-5 start to this 10-game stand, the Crew is looking to plug some holes in the boat. They remain four games ahead in the Wild Card, and four games behind in the Division with 19 games to play.  They’re still in good shape but hope to clean up the defense and find the barrel of the bat this week.

Next up, the Reds. Dusty Baker’s club took 2 of 3 at home against the Cubs to help keep the Brewers in striking distance. Sunday, Jolbert Cabrera had a walk-off hit as the Reds scored three times in the ninth to beat Cubs closer Kerry Wood. Chris Dickerson had a two-run pinch-hit single in the ninth to tie it after the Reds had only three hits and one run entering the inning. The Reds are coming off a 6-3 homestand and the walk-off win on Sunday was their 11th of the season, tying Florida for the most in the majors.

Cincinnati sends two hot pitchers against the Crew in Edinson Volquez (16-5), a Cy Young candidate, and Bronso Arroyo (14-10). Arroyo has a 3.13 ERA in 10 starts since the All-Star break. In 69.0 innings pitched, Arroyo has 50 K’s and only 18 walks.

These teams have split the first 12 games in the season series, with each club going 4-2 in the opponents’ park.

The Brewers split their four-game series with the Padres. After averaging 5.6 runs per game in August, the Brewers are scoring 2.3 runs per game this month.

Edinson Volquez looks to become the first Red to win 17 games in a season since Pete Schourek posted 18 victories in 1995. Mario Soto was the last righthander to win at least 17 games when he went 18-7 in 1984.

BraunR08RS267.jpg Prior to surrendering six runs in 5.0 innings in his first start in September, Dave Bush had lowered his ERA every month this season.

Jay Bruce was 1-for-2 Sunday and has reached base in 11 consecutive games, batting .316 (12-for-38) in the process.

Edwin Encarnacion is slugging .569 with the bases empty, compared to .349 with runners on, the largest disparity in the National League (minimum 3.1 PA per team game).

Ryan Braun’s 21 homers versus the NL Central this season are the most by any player against a single division.

Pitching Matchups:
Monday: Dave Bush (9-10, 4.33) vs. RHP Edinson Volquez (16-5, 3.12)
Tuesday: Jeff Suppan (10-8, 4.56) vs. RHP Ramon Ramirez (0-0, 2.70)
Wednesday: CC Sabathia (9-0, 1.42) vs. RHP Bronson Arroyo (14-10, 4.84)

Monday and Tuesday’s game will be televised in High Definition on FSN Wisconsin, while Wednesday’s matinee can be seen on WMLW at 1pm in the Milwaukee area. John Walsh will produce, Michael Oddino will direct.

Have a great week.

Padres @ Brewers

After a 20-7 August, September has been a little rude so far. The Mets capped off a stellar road trip with a sweep of the Crew. The last time the Brewers were swept at Miller Park (Cubs – July), the Brewers responded by winning 20 of the next 27.

Despite a 3-game losing streak, the Brewers have seven home games remaining against the Padres (4) and Reds (3). The Crew opens play Thursday with a 4.5 game lead over the Phillies in the Wild Card race and just 4.5 games behind the Cubs in the Division race. The Cubs play @ Cincinnati and @ St. Louis with off days prior to each series. The Phillies play @ the Mets and home against the Marlins with an off day Thursday.

The Brewers have won four of their last five meetings with the Padres, including two of three against them this season.

Milwaukee will be looking to snap its three-game losing streak. The Brewers have the third-best home record among NL teams this season (41-27).

The Padres have lost each of their last nine road games and are an ML-worst 21-47 away from home this season.

Jeff Suppan is 5-0 with a 3.00 ERA in his last six starts and has won each of his last two starts against the Padres.

Shawn Estes will be making his first start since being placed on the DL back on May 31. Estes is 5-6 with a 6.01 ERA in 14 career starts against the Brewers and will be facing them for the first time since September 15, 2005.

Since snapping his 12-game hitting streak, Brian Giles has gone 0-for-7 in his last two games. Giles is hitting .167 (2-for-12) in his three games against the Brewers this season.

Milwaukee is an ML-best 25-12 in one-run games this season.

J.J. Hardy is hitting .467 (7-for-15) with two triples, one homer and three RBI over his last four games.

All games will be televised on FSN Wisconsin with John Walsh producing, Michael Oddino directing and Brian Mikolajek graphic-ing.

Pitching Matchups:
Thursday: Jeff Suppan (10-7, 4.49) vs. LHP Shawn Estes (1-1, 3.33), 7:05
Friday: CC Sabathia (9-0, 1.43) vs. RHP Josh Geer (1-0, 3.60), 7:05
Saturday: Ben Sheets (12-7, 2.97) vs. RHP Jake Peavy (9-9, 2.69), 6:05
Sunday: Manny Parra (10-6, 4.10) vs. RHP Chris Young (4-5, 4.91), 1:05

Have a great weekend!

Brewers @ Pirates

A split and some ruffled Redbird feathers in St. Louis keeps the Brewers 3.5 games up in the Wild Card standings as they begin a 3-game weekend series in Pittsburgh.

I’ve done a dozen talk shows already this week and the most talked about subject is the “respect the game” cries from the Cardinals. My response is: “Who cares if players are offended!” Everybody shows everybody up these days and whether you’re slamming helmets, pointing to the sky after homeruns, untucking shirts, or fist pumping after strikeouts, it’s all part of the “show” and the best way to “do something about it” is to beat down the opponent. Emotion makes great theatrics. The Brewers, for the first time in a decade, dominated the Cardinals all season long. I hope every player remembers every “offensive” moment so we can have another spicy season series next year.

As for setting an example, I believe questionable behavior from professionals offer great opportunities to teach your kids the difference between grown men getting paid to perform/entertain and a youth player playing for fun. Parents, teach your kids, and coaches, teach your players the difference between playing with emotion (good) and performing a “look at me” act that can disrespect your opponent (bad). They both come with responsibilites.

With that being said, here’s to three more days of untucked shirts in Pittsburgh!

The Brewers are 8-1 vs the Pirates this year including six straight wins, committing just one error over the stretch.

The Brewers have won 15 of their last 20 games, but have still lost 1.5  games in the standings to the Cubs (17-4) since August 5.

The Pirates have lost seven straight games, allowing at least 10 runs four times over the stretch.

Paul Maholm has allowed more than two runs just once over his last seven starts.

Adam LaRoche has hit .414 (24/58) with five homers, 14 runs and 11 RBI over his last 17 games against the Brewers.

Mike Cameron has batted .423 (30/71) over his last 20 games against the Pirates, during which his teams have gone 18-2

Ryan Braun has hit 67 home runs in his career, which ties for the fifth most after 2 seasons in Major League history.

Corey Hart (19hr / 22sb) is 1 home run away from becoming the first player in franchise history to have 2 seasons with at least 20 homers and 20 steals.

Pitching Matchups:
Friday: Dave Bush (8-9, 4.24) vs. LHP Tom Gorzelanny (6-8, 6.82)
Saturday: Jeff Suppan (9-7, 4.58) vs. LHP Paul Maholm (8-7, 3.62)
Sunday: CC Sabathia (8-0, 1.59) vs. RHP Jeff Karstens (2-3, 3.48)

As for TV, games Friday and Sunday will be on FSN Wisconsin. Saturday’s game will be on WMLW. Ryan Schaber produces, Michael Oddino directs and Brian Mikolajek will be in the truck eating pre-packaged food.

Have a great weekend.

PS. Tim would like to know how this ’08 Brewers teams compares to the ’92, or even the ’82 Brewers teams: That’s a question only Bob Uecker and Tony Migliaccio can answer with authority. I think the ’92 team wishes the ’08 Wild Card rules were in play back then. The ’82 team probably had more talent relative to the rest of the league but big names are made in the post season so let’s see if the ’08 Crew can get there then revisit this one later.

Brewers @ Cardinals

A big, 2-game series begins Tuesday between the Brewers and the Cardinals. The Crew swept four games from the Redbirds last time through St. Louis and there is plenty of healthy dislike between the two teams this time around.

At 76-55, the Brewers open the series five games behind the Division leading Cubs and 3.5 games ahead of St. Louis in the Wild Card standings. The Crew is a season-high 21 games over .500. The team has not been 22 games over the .500 mark since finishing the 1992 season at 92-70.

With their 3-game sweep of the Pirates over the weekend, the Brewers have now won four straight games overall and are 14-4 since August 5.

Milwaukee has beaten St. Louis six straight times, outscoring the Cardinals by a combined 30-15 in the process.

St. Louis took two of three from the Braves over the weekend and has now won seven of 10 games overall.

Albert Pujols is the reigning NL Player of the Week and has four straight multi-hit games and is hitting .563 (18-for-32) with four home runs and 12 RBI during his current 8-game hitting streak.

J.J. Hardy is currently riding an NL-high 10-game hit streak for the Brewers (16-for-42, .381 BA, 3 HR, 11 RBI during streak).

Ben Sheets is going for a career season-high tying 12th win tonight–Sheets is 0-3 with a 3.98 ERA in his last five road starts.

The Cardinals have nine walk-off wins this season–tied for second-most in baseball behind the Reds (10)

Cardinals Injury Update:

Brian Barton (strained right oblique) was injured in the sixth inning August 24.

Jason Isringhausen (torn tendon near right elbow) went on the 15-day disabled list August 22 and is out for the rest of the season.

Chris Carpenter (strained right shoulder muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to August 11.

Mark Mulder (left shoulder strain) went on the 15-day disabled list July 10. He missed the season’s first three months while recovering from shoulder surgery. He was told not to throw a ball until mid-August.

Josh Kinney, out since suffering a broken right elbow in August 2007, began a rehab assignment with a scoreless inning Sunday for Double-A Springfield. He hit the first batter, then induced a double play and recorded a strikeout.

Chris Duncan (pinched nerve in neck) went on the 15-day disabled list July 22. He had season-ending surgery August

Pitching Matchups:
Tuesday: Ben Sheets (11-7, 3.16) vs. RHP Todd Wellemeyer (11-4, 3.79)
Wednesday: Manny Parra (10-6, 4.10) vs. RHP Adam Wainwright (6-3, 3.14)

Air time for both games is 6:30pm CST on FSN Wisconsin with Ryan Schaber producing, Michael Oddino directing and Brian Mikolajek counting the untucked shirts.

Enjoy the week.

Pirates @ Brewers

The Brewers took two of three from the red-hot Astros and after a day off, one of three in the next eight days, it’s the Pittsburgh Pirates next on the bill.

The Pirates traded away Jason Bay (BOS) and Xavier Nady (NYY), two of their big boppers, but still have a roster full of up and comers playing for jobs next year. The Bucs also traded 3B Jose Bautista to the Blue Jays to make room for Andy LaRoche, who was acquired from the Dodgers in the three team deal that sent Manny Ramirez to the Dodgers.

RHP Matt Capps is expected to return from the Disabled List (shoulder) Saturday.

The Pirates will have a major say in the Central division. The Brewers play the Bucs nine more times, and Pittsburgh has three games remaining against the Cubs and the Cardinals.

The Brewers have won nine straight home games versus the Pirates.

Dave Bush is 5-2 with a 2.75 ERA over his last 10 starts and is 2-0 with a 1.77 ERA in three starts this month. Opponents are hitting only .178 against Bush in August.

Zach Duke has been struggling recently. Duke is 0-6 with a 8.52 ERA in his last eight starts.

Adam LaRoche is hitting .333 (17-for-51) with five home runs and eight RBI in his last 14 games.

Milwaukee has recorded 36 come from behind victories this season, tied with the Cubs for the most among NL teams.

J.J. Hardy is hitting .406 (28-for-69) with five home runs and 17 RBI in his last 17 games against the Pirates.

The Brewers open the Pirates series 5.5 games behind the Cubs in the NL Central and 2.5 games ahead of the Cardinals for the Wild Card.

Here’s the schedule breakdown for the Brew Crew the rest of the way:
34 games
19 home / 15 road
19 vs -.500 teams (vs PIT, @ PIT, vs SD, vs CIN, @ CIN, vs PIT)
15 vs playoff contenders (@ STL, vs NYM, @ PHI, @ CUBS, vs CUBS)
6 vs Cubs
2 vs Cardinals

The Cubs have 35 games left (16 home, 19 road) including 20 versus playoff contenders (Brewers-6, Cardinals-6, Phillies-4, Mets-4)

The Cardinals have 33 games left (18 home, 15 road), 18 versus playoff contenders (Brewers-2, Arizona-7, Cubs-6, Florida-3).

Pitching Matchups:
Friday: Dave Bush (7-9, 4.26) vs. LHP Zach Duke (4-11, 5.26) on FSN Wisconsin
Saturday: Jeff Suppan (8-7, 4.62) vs. RHP Jeff Karstens (2-2, 2.25) on WMLW
Sunday: CC Sabathia (8-0, 1.60) vs. LHP Paul Maholm (8-7, 3.64) on FSN Wisconsin

Have a great weekend.

Astros @ Brewers

A 3-3 road trip out west means the Brewers open a six game, seven day homestand 5.5 games behind the Cubs in the NL Central and two games ahead of the Cardinals in the Wild Card race. CC Sabathia, Ben Sheets, and Manny Parra will match up against the Astros at Miller Park.

The season series between these clubs is tied at six wins apiece.

Houston has won 16 of its last 21 games and will be looking to extend its road winning streak to five games in a row.

The Brewers have dropped three of their last four games after winning each of their previous eight contests.

The Crew is a Major League best 24-11 in one-run games this season.

Dating back to June 10 (when he was still with the Indians), CC Sabathia has won 10 straight decisions. Sabathia will be facing the Astros for the first time in his career.

The Astros are 15-5 since they last played the Brewers on July 27.

The Astros have won each of Randy Wolf’s four starts since he joined the team. The Crew is 24-13 vs left handed starters this year.

Ty Wigginton extended his career-high hitting streak to 14 games with three hits, including one home run, on Sunday. He’s hitting .510 with five doubles, one triple, six home runs and 16 RBIs during the streak.

Darin Erstad extended his hitting streak to a season-long seven games Sunday. He’s hitting .370 with two doubles and six RBIs during the streak, and he’s batting .286 with eight runs scored and four RBIs in 12 games in the leadoff spot.

Miguel Tejada went 2-for-4 on Sunday for his 34th multi-hit game of the season. Since July 26, Tejada is hitting .333 and has multiple hits in nine of 21 games.

Brad Ausmus snapped a 0-for-11 slump with a third-inning single Sunday. It the first hit of the month for Ausmus.

Jose Valverde recorded his 31st save of the season Sunday. It was also the 129th of his career, tying him with Antonio Alfonseca for fourth place on the all-time saves list by Dominican-born players.

Brewers @ San Diego

The Brewers have won six straight and a clean sweep of a four game homestand sends the Crew to San Diego just 3.5 games back in the Division and three games ahead in the Wild Card standings.

At 68-51, the Brewers are a season-high 17 games over .500. The Brewers have not been 17 games over .500 since 1992.

The Brewers and Padres will be meeting for the first time this season. San Diego won five of the seven meetings between these teams last year but it was those final two Brewers wins that sent the Padres into a one game playoff with Colorado and ultimately out of the post-season.

It’s been a free-fall for the Padres in ’08. Only Washington has a worse record in the National League. San Diego has just four wins in its last 20 home games.

August was the crumble month last season for Milwaukee (9-18) but this year has been a different story. The Crew is already 8-2 in August and hoping to distance themselves from the Wild Card pack with another successful road trip.

The Brewers have won 13 of the last 16 road games.

The Brewers have outscored their opponents 37-9 during their current six-game winning streak.

Brewers starters are 7-2 with a 1.98 ERA over the last 10 games (72.2ip, 16er) and have posted a 3.92 ERA for the season, second in the National League.

Jeff Suppan is 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA in his last two starts. Five of Suppan’s seven wins this season have come on the road.

Cha Seung Baek is 0-4 with an 8.18 ERA in his last five games (four starts) at Petco Park.

Adrian Gonzalez is 6-for-10 (.600) with one double, one homer and four RBI in his last two games. Gonzalez is hitting .468 (22-for-47) in 14 career games against the Brewers.

Brian Giles has two doubles, three homers and six RBI in his last five games.

Shawn Estes (fractured left thumb) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 29.
